Instructions:
- Preheat Oven & Prepare Pan
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Grease a large baking pan (or line it with parchment paper).
- Mix Dry Ingredients
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- Combine Wet Ingredients
- In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, melted butter, and egg until well combined.
- Make the Dough
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a soft dough forms.
- Knead lightly (don’t overwork it) until smooth.
- Shape the Rusks
- Roll the dough into small logs or balls (about 2 inches long) and place them close together in the prepared pan.
- First Bake (Drying Phase)
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until lightly golden and firm.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
- Slice & Second Bake (Drying Out)
- Once cool enough to handle, slice the rusks into individual pieces.
- Place them back on a baking tray, cut side up.
- Reduce oven temperature to 200°F (100°C) and bake for 1.5–2 hours until completely dry and crisp.
- Cool & Store
- Let the rusks cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
- They’ll stay fresh for weeks!
