Instructions:

  1. Cook the spaghetti:

    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

    • Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente.

    • Drain, reserving about ½ cup of pasta water, and set aside.

  2. Brown the ground beef:

    • While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

    • Add the diced onion and cook until softened (about 3-4 minutes).

    • If using garlic, add it and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

    • Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat if needed.

  3. Simmer the sauce:

    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, and oregano.

    • Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of reserved pasta water.

  4. Combine and serve:

    • Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce.

    • Serve hot with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Enjoy your simple, old-school spaghetti! 🍝
