  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a 9-inch pie dish or square baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add the egg and milk, and mix until just combined—don’t overmix!
  5. Transfer batter to prepared pan and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let cool, then slice and serve with berries and whipped cream.
