Ingredients:

  • 3-4 firm green tomatoes (unripe)

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (divided)

  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)

  • 1 large egg (optional, for extra crispiness)

  • 1 cup cornmeal (or breadcrumbs/panko for variation)

  • ½ cup fine cornmeal or breadcrumbs (for extra crunch)

  • 1 tsp salt (plus more to taste)

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp paprika (or cayenne for heat)

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • Vegetable oil (for frying—about ½ inch deep in skillet)
