Instructions
1. Prepare the Caramel Layer:
- In a medium saucepan, heat the granulated sugar over medium heat. Stir constantly until the sugar melts and turns into a deep amber-colored liquid (about 5-7 minutes). Be careful not to burn it.
- Once the sugar is fully melted, add the cubed butter. Stir until the butter is completely melted and combined.
- Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring continuously. The mixture will bubble, so be cautious.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Let the caramel cool for 10-15 minutes.
2. Prepare the Fudge Layer:
- In a separate saucepan, combine the chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and butter. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
3. Assemble the Squares:
- Line an 8×8 inch (20×20 cm) baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.
- Pour the caramel layer into the prepared dish and spread it evenly. Let it cool for 10 minutes.
- Pour the fudge layer over the caramel and spread it evenly with a spatula.
- If desired, sprinkle sea salt flakes or chopped nuts on top for added flavor and texture.
4. Chill and Set:
- Refrigerate the fudge squares for at least 2-3 hours, or until firm.
5. Cut and Serve:
- Once set, lift the fudge out of the dish using the parchment paper overhang.
- Cut into small squares using a sharp knife. For clean cuts, wipe the knife with a warm, damp cloth between slices.
- Serve and enjoy! Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Enjoy these creamy, dreamy caramel fudge squares as a treat for yourself or to share with friends and family! 🍫✨
